“Virginia Woolfs book To The Lighthouse is categorized as one of the most difficult books to read. The notion about its difficulty in reading attracted my attention and I was eager to find it by myself. Despite its alleged difficulty in reading the book concentrates on tracing ones sea legs. The book employs a lot of fiction that is intermingled throughout separated consciousness. The plot of the book is set in three parts. This includes The Window Time Passes and The Lighthouse. In regards to the first part the book illustrates the relationship existing between character experience actual experience and the surrounding. Character experience is portrayed in the way the characters presented relate to one another. The main characters are Mr. and Mrs. Ramsay and James their son. Actual experience emerges due the difference in the role of men and women. Finally the surrounding is depicted in the way it influences human activities. In the second part there are no characters represented. However only tragic events are presented differently in a span of ten years. Four years represent the starts and end of the First World War. The other years are filled with death tragedies in which Mrs. Ramsay and other characters die. The last part of the plot The Lighthouse elaborates on the return of the remaining characters in their home after ten years.
The difficulties of this book are based on the major themes it presents complexities in experience as well as human relationships and modernism. In regard to the experience of the complexities the book concentrates on the investigation of perceptions while trying to understand individuals through observation. One would be required to spend significant time evaluating his or her own thoughts words and emotions. These aspects are those that arise in mind while responding to what one has observed. This sets one wandering in other peoples observance as well as passionate rhythms. This poses the challenge of identifying individuals and their thoughts. Someone can easily lose focus on whose mind he/she is listening hearing and who/what is being spoken. This makes one feels as if he/she is filled with an alienated conscious. The trick on how to go about it is by surrendering and letting yourself be carried along moved and sometimes amused. As per human relationship complexities perception is analyzed in the context of emotional and human relationship with other human beings. In respect to modernism Woolf displays modernism in terms of human thoughts. Here transience of human nature is considered the major subject in dealing with perception.
This piece of literature can be regarded as unclear vexing and distressful. This is due to lack of an omniscient narrator apart from the second part. The description of the plot is explained by fluctuating perceptions of the characters. The reader experiences hardships since there is no clear guide due to the lack of a narrator. Therefore character development is formulated using ones own views and opinions. On the other hand in the second part Woolf wrote it from a displaced narrators view. In this case it was written in a manner related to events and time instead of the characters. Thus the narrator appears as distorted and lacking focus. The challenging and difficult attributes of the book make it easy to forget after one has read it. Therefore the SQ4R technique can be critical in preparing ones brain before reading this book.”
