Title: The prospects of Democracy in Egypt in the wake of the Arab Spring.
Abstract: This Research Proposal deals with the problem of maintaining democracy in Egypt especially since the Arab Spring which began in Dec 2010 in the Arab world initiated all kinds of protests and anti-Government demonstrations which had an overall destabilizing effect.
Introduction: The topic is relevant in todays context as it is hotly debated and also a concern in international relations as countries other than Egypt may be facing similar situations. On humanitarian grounds also the topic assumes importance for lack of democracy may cause turmoil in political life and associated loss of human life.
Research Background: The revolution which has affected Egypt is a fight against corruption and dictatorship. What does the future hold in store for the country in political economic and social terms? What would be the effect of establishing democracy in Egypt? What would happen if that was not possible? What are the short-term and long-term consequences?
Aims & objectives: The research proposes to study current political conditions in Egypt to find out the viability of a stable democracy. It also aims to understand factors responsible for the recent status and why the Arab Spring occurred in the Middle East and North Africa. Obstacles: There may be several obstacles to establishing democracy in Egypt such as historical background which suggests that since the time of the pharaohs democracy has never been completely established; the legal and political system in the country; tendency towards military dictatorship; lack of strong leadership etc.
Methodology: Qualitative research will use library textbooks and peer reviewed journals. Also research will include content analysis i.e. referring to newspapers news channels and other media sources and historical research. Informal discussions with mentors and academicians who specialize in Egyptian studies may also be done if possible. Quantitative research will include existing statistics and empirical data.
Research Importance: The democratic transition movement in Egypt is complex and interspersed with popular revolts restriction of freedom many deaths and violence on the streets and the latest ISIS attack on Egyptian Coptic Christians. Internal events in Egypt have repercussions on the entire Middle East. Egypt has control over the Suez Canal and a peaceful Egypt is the basis of smooth maritime trade. Egypt and Jordan are the two Arab countries which have maintained cordial relationship with Israel. Egypt has close ties with the U.S.

Conclusion: From the time of President Mubarak the constitution has not been strictly followed and there have been many cases where people have been tortured or have disappeared. Under the circumstances democracy is a tenuous proposition. Egypt is the largest country in North Africa and an important Arab state and the world is affected by what is happening in Egypt.
