more than one possible definition; if so please opt for the one you think is most
likely to be the best definition given the period context (in other words for a

quality of costume terminology to be found on the internet varies wildly and is
often poor please use the net as a source of definitions only after you have
already consulted print sources. Wikipedia is not an acceptable source.

The vocabulary for historic dress is challenging even when the past is not so far
distant. It changes often radically over time and from place to place part of the
key to understanding the sources for historic dress is having a command of what
people called their clothes in the period youre looking at. Every other week I
will give you two vocabulary lists from the period we are studying at the time
usually containing 10 words each and ask you to define them by looking the
words up in specialist dictionaries in the course of the week following. Lists are
due at the beginning of class the week following. Please submit them
electronically; Moodle is preferred.
